Are FDA Approved Diet Pills Safe?

There are very few diet pills on the market that have been certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as being safe.

This is because before they are able to receive the FDA stamp of approval, diet pills must go through rigorous animal and human studies that often take several years of scrutiny before it is declared “proven safe” by the FDA.

Even though many diet pills that have gained FDA approval are completely safe, there are many that have dangerous long-term symptoms that do not manifest themselves until years after the trials.

If this should happen, the FDA issues a recall, meaning that the product must be removed from the shelves of stores and destroyed.

This is not to say, however, that all or even most of the drugs that are FDA approved will eventually end up being recalled. There are many trusted diet pills on the market today that have never shown dangerous symptoms.

What is an Example of an FDA Approved Diet Pill?

There are two types of diet pills that receive approval from the FDA: fat blockers (that stop the body from absorbing fat) and appetite suppressors.

The most popular diet pill that is approved by the FDA is Alli, also known as Xenical. This product works as a fat blocker that can absorb up to 25% of the fat that you consume in order to keep it from being absorbed by your body and stored as fat.

One Diet Pill that was Repealed by the FDA

Even though FDA approved diet pills have been shown to be safe, make sure to take them with a metaphorical grain of salt, because they may not be safe over the long-haul.

There are many diet pills that were once FDA approved that were later recalled because of life-threatening or very dangerous side-effects.

The most commonly-known diet pills to be recalled in recent years are various Hydroxycut products. Though they received FDA approval, it was later recalled after a 19-year-old boy died of liver damage from the effects of using Hydroxycut. Other users’ livers failed and were forced to receive liver transplants.

After a thorough investigation, 14 Hydroxycut products were recalled from the market.

The Bottom Line

When the FDA approves diet pills, it means that as far as they have been able to determine in clinical studies, a diet pill is safe for users.
